SKATERS ON WHITTLESEY WASH,CAMBRIDGESHIRE, ON MONDAY 4TH JAN 2010...Skaters have been flocking to the frozen Cambridgeshire Fens after the cold snap gave them the rare chance to enjoy the ancient sport...Plummeting temperatures meant a slippery return to work for commuters this morning (Mon), but others made the most of the icy weather as they headed to the flooded Fen fields...The shallow waters of the Whittlesey Wash in the heart of the Fens have been turned into an enormous natural ice rink and it is a skater's paradise with five acres of frozen fields...If the low temperatures continue, as forecasters predict, skaters hope the British and Fenland Skating Championships would be able to take place for the first time in more than a DECADE...The last day's racing was 13 YEARS ago in 1997..."We're very excited about being able to skate in the Fens again," said Roger Giles, 70, of the Welney and District Skating Club..."We nearly ran the Championships last year but it didn't happen so it would be great if we were able to run them this time.
