Sun for St Swithin's Day

Brits can look forward to 40 days of sun this summer as St Swithin's Day tomorrow (Tues) is forecast to be warm and dry with temperatures up to 25C.

According to legend, if it rains on July 15, the feast day of Saxon bishop Saint Swithin, it will rain continuously for 40 days, but if it does not rain then 40 days of good weather will be enjoyed.

Many are now hoping the legend will come true as most of the country is expected to enjoy a dry and fine St Swithin's Day, with temperatures increasing to a possible 31C by the weekend.

Forecasters at the Met Office say there is "no scientific basis" to St Swithin's Day, but the South East could hang onto the warm and sunny weather until the end of the week.

"There is no scientific evidence that supports St Swithin's Day, which is a shame as for most people it is looking like a nice day with prolonged sunshine," said Nicola Maxey of the Met Office.

The recent spell of warm weather and sunshine has helped the lavender to bloom at Cadwell Farm in Hitchin, Herts.
