Traditional Cam Uni graduations

PIC SHOWS CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY DONS WAITING OUTSIDE THE SENATE HOUSE TO CONGRATULATE THEIR STUDENTS AFTER THEY RECEIVED THEIR DEGREES ON GRADUATION DAY JUNE 26TH.

Students dressed in black gowns as the traditional Cambridge University graduation ceremonies took place today (Thurs).

The students, from Gonville and Caius College and Trinity Hall paraded into the historic Senate House watched by family and friends to collect their degrees from the prestigious university.

Many parts of the degree ceremonies, which will also be held tomorrow (Fri) and Saturday, have their origin amongst the earliest customs of the university 800 years ago.

Undergraduates are required to wear the gown of their college and the hood of the degree they are about to receive.

Mortarboards are optional for Cambridge graduates and if worn they must carry them into the Senate House.

Gonville and Caius is one of the oldest and largest colleges at the world-renowned university.

Alumni include Francis Crick, joint discoverer of the structure of DNA and Sir Howard Florey, developer of penicillin. Stephen Hawking is a current fellow of the college.
